about in short;
Frances Alleblas born 1971 in the Netherlands.
Frances Alleblas is a Dutch artist who’s been living in Singapore since 2002. She’s got a BA in fine arts from the ‘Willem de Kooning Fine Arts Academy’ in Rotterdam. She did part of her studies in Java at ITB Bandung and later on studied “Pacific Art” at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
Her work consists of drawings, printmaking, photography and video work.
In recent years she’s working mainly in series. These can include both drawings, prints and photos and videos. The latest drawing series are large scale watercolour & charcoal pieces inspired by a book called ‘The island of Bali’ by Miguel Covarrubias. The series is called “New Mythologies; the Covarrubias series”. The texts in the book inspired her to make the drawings. Frances lived in Bali from 1999 till 2002, and the island still has a large influence on her and her work.
Her video works are poetic art pieces, in which there are no actors and nothing is really set up. Her video “Recover” is about an ocean kayaker who she came across one day, has been shown in Cannes, New York, Italy and London.
Recently she’s been working on a series of works she’s named “The Island”.
In the video, the photographs and the series of large scale charcoal drawings on canvas we see a body of work inspired by childhood fantasies of uninhabited tropical islands, adventure films and the disillusion of adulthood. In this work she’s mainly using texts from “The Blue Lagoon”, “Lord of the Flies’’ and “Robinson Crusoe”. Apparent paradise and dystopia. Beauty and decay. Tropicalia. What's fake and what's real.
Frances draws inspiration from personal experiences, nature, film, literature and philosophy.
Her very latest work is a small side project inspired by the Corona virus’ world wide lockdowns, which resulted in watercolour drawings of houses in which everything takes place; the landscapes, the memories, the faces.
Frances’s work is exhibited worldwide. She participates in biennales, group shows and shows her work in her studio at Wessex Estate Singapore at least once a year during the open house art walks, which she initiated.
Lives and works in;
Rotterdam, the Netherlands till 1999
Java, Indonesia 1997-1998
Bali, Indonesia 1999 - 2002.
Hawai'i, USA 2004.
Currently in Singapore since 2002
