‘THE SEA OF THE RISING SUN’
made for the Global Oceans International Print Exchange 2017
Upstairs Gallery at the Hahndorf Academy,Adelaide, South Australia,
To support the the Australian Marine Conservation Society
Size; A5
Technique; blind embossing & monoprint (water soluble block printing colour by Daler-Rowney) on (Fabriano Rosapina) paper
Edition; 12
Signed.
Statement;
The print shows the contours of the traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe “Hokulea”, currently circumnavigating the world to educate and raise awareness of marine environmental concerns. Embossed in the paper are the contours of a frame, like you’d find in classic adventure books of far away sea voyages. The canoe is printed so high in the ‘frame’ that it sticks out, it doesn’t fit. The canoe sitting so high in the frame is a metaphor for the rising sea levels, caused by global warming. The colours of the canoe are bright and sunny (each one of the 12 prints is slightly different), like a rainbow and represent hope and beauty, as the ocean is still the most beautiful thing on our planet, even though she is in distress. The rainbow colours also represent Hawai’i, nicknamed the ‘Rainbow State’. ‘Hokulea’ is a Hawai’ian built/based vessel.
